تذكّروا الساعات التي تلت الحادي عشر من سبتمبر، حين اجتمعنا يدًا واحدة لنردّ على الهجوم على وطننا. استمددنا القوة حين صعد رجال الإطفاء مسرعين إلى الطوابق العليا، وخاطروا بأرواحهم كي يحيا آخرون؛ وحين اندفع المنقذون وسط الدخان والنيران في البنتاغون؛ وحين ضحّى رجال ونساء الرحلة 93 بأنفسهم لينقذوا مبنى الكابيتول؛ وحين رُفعت الأعلام على شرفات المنازل في أنحاء أمريكا، وصار الغرباء أصدقاء. كان ذلك أسوأ يوم شهدناه، لكنه أظهر أفضل ما في كلّ واحد منا.
