لا ينبغي أن نثق بشيء سوى الوقائع، فهي تُقدَّم إلينا من الطبيعة، ولا تستطيع أن تخدع. وينبغي لنا في كل حال أن نُخضع استدلالنا لاختبار التجربة، وألّا نطلب الحقيقة إلا عبر الطريق الطبيعي، طريق التجربة والملاحظة.
