الحقيقة البسيطة أن العالم لا يدفع ثمن الخدمات التي تقدّمها الغابات. فهي في الوقت الراهن تساوي قيمةً أكبر ميتةً منها حيّة: من أجل فول الصويا، ولحم البقر، وزيت النخيل، والاستغلال الخشبي، لتلبية الطلب من الدول الأخرى. وأرى أن علينا أن نكون واضحين في أن دوافع تدمير الغابات المطيرة لا تنشأ في دول الغابات المطيرة، بل في الدول المتقدمة التي تسببت، عن غير قصد أو عمدًا، في تغير المناخ.
