تحتاج الرأسمالية الحديثة إلى رجالٍ يتعاونون بسلاسة وبأعداد كبيرة، يريدون استهلاك المزيد والمزيد، وأذواقهم موحّدة يسهل التأثير فيها والتنبّؤ بها. تحتاج إلى رجال يشعرون بالحرية والاستقلال، لا يخضعون لسلطة أو مبدأ أو ضمير، ومع ذلك هم مستعدون لأن يُؤمروا، ويفعلوا ما يُنتظر منهم، ويندمجوا في الآلة الاجتماعية دون احتكاك؛ يمكن توجيههم دون إكراه، وقيادتهم دون قادة، وحثّهم دون غاية، إلا غاية واحدة: أن ينجحوا، وأن يكونوا في حركة دائمة، وأن يعملوا، وأن يمضوا قدمًا.
