إنّ الاغتراب كما نجده في المجتمع الحديث شاملٌ تقريبًا... لقد أبدع الإنسان عالمًا من الأشياء المصنوعة بيده، كما لم يكن من قبل. وشيّد آلةً اجتماعية معقّدة لتدير الآلة التقنية التي صنعها. وكلّما ازدادت القوى التي أطلقها قوةً وضخامة، شعر هو نفسه بعجزٍ أكبر كإنسان. إنه مملوكٌ لمخلوقاته، وقد فقد ملكية نفسه.
