لطالما بدا لي أمرًا غريبًا... أن الصفات التي نُعجَب بها في الناس، كالطيبة والكرم والانفتاح والصدق والتفهّم والإحساس، هي نفسها ما يُفضي إلى الإخفاق في نظامنا. أما الصفات التي نمقتها، كالحدّة والجشع والطمع والخسّة والأنانية والمصلحة الذاتية، فهي سمات النجاح. والناس، وإن أعجبوا بالأولى، فإنهم يحبّون ثمار الثانية.
