أخذ المسيحيون يفقدون روح التعصب التي كانت تحرّكهم: فقد أثبتت التجربة خطأ طرد اليهود من إسبانيا، واضطهاد أولئك المسيحيين في فرنسا الذين اختلف اعتقادهم قليلًا عن اعتقاد الملك. لقد أدركوا أن الغيرة على نشر الدين شيءٌ، وأن التعلّق الصحيح به شيءٌ آخر؛ وأنّ حبّه وتنفيذ أوامره لا يقتضيان كراهية من يخالفونه واضطهادهم.
