ليس من الواقعية ولا من الحزم في الرأي أن نحلّ المشكلات ونتخذ الإجراءات بمعزل عن غايات قيمية عليا، مع أن بعضنا يزعم ذلك. وفي رأيي، هذا حماقة لا تدبّر فيها. فهو يتجاهل حقائق الإيمان الإنساني والعاطفة والاعتقاد، وهي قوى تفوق في نهاية المطاف كل حسابات اقتصادينا وجنرالاتنا. وبالطبع، التمسّك بالمعايير والمثل والرؤية في مواجهة الأخطار الداهمة يحتاج إلى شجاعة كبيرة وثقة بالنفس. لكننا نعلم أيضاً أن الذين يجرؤون على الإخفاق الكبير وحدهم يستطيعون أن ينجزوا الإنجاز الكبير.
