ثمة فرقٌ بنيوي بين نظرة أوروبا إلى إسرائيل ونظرة أمريكا إليها. فالنظرة الأوروبية يحكمها ما كان للاستعمار من شأنٍ في ماضي أوروبا؛ فنحن في نظر الأوروبيين أشبه بالبلجيكيين في الكونغو، أو الفرنسيين في الجزائر، أو البريطانيين في الهند: دخلاءُ غريبون على أرض غيرنا. لكنّ الحقيقة أننا [الإسرائيليين] نقيم هنا منذ أربعة آلاف عام، وهذه أرض أجدادنا.
