الكبرياء لا تقيس الازدهار بمزاياها هي، بل بمساوئ غيرها. ولا تريد حتى أن تكون إلهةً، ما لم يبقَ من البائسين من تستطيع أن تأمرهم وتتسلّط عليهم، ليبدو شقاؤهم سببًا لسعادتها أشدّ بريقًا، ولتُعذَّب فقرُهم وتتفاقم بعرض ثروتها أمامهم. هذه الحيّة الجهنمية التي تتغلغل في القلب البشري تمنع الناس من إصلاح حياتهم، وتشدّهم إلى الوراء كما تفعل سمكة الرَّضَّاعة بالتمسك بالسفينة.
