تشارك كتابةُ تاريخ الحضارة غرورَ كل مشروع فلسفي: إذ تقدّم مشهدًا مضحكًا لجزءٍ يزعم أنه يشرح الكل. وكمثل الفلسفة، لا عذر عقلانيًّا لمثل هذا المسعى، وهو في أحسن أحواله حماقةٌ جريئة؛ ومع ذلك، فلنأمل أن يغري، كالفلسفة، بعض الأرواح المتهوّرة بالغوص في أعماقه المهلكة.
