القدرة على بلوغ «التضحية الفكرية» لدى أهل الورع الديني الفائقين هي السمة الحاسمة للإنسان المتدين إيجابًا. والدليل على ذلك أنه رغم (بل بسبب) علم اللاهوت، الذي يكشفها، يظل التوتّر بين مجالات القيم، أي «العلم» و«المقدّس»، توترًا لا يمكن رأبه.
