إنّ انفعالاتنا هي الوسيلة الرئيسة لحفظ الذات؛ فالسعي إلى تدميرها عبثٌ بقدر ما هو عقيمٌ، إذ يعني ذلك التغلّب على الطبيعة وإعادة تشكيل صنع الله. ولو أمر الله الإنسانَ أن يُفني الانفعالات التي وهبه إيّاها، لأمره أن يكون وألّا يكون في آنٍ واحد، ولناقض نفسه. لم يُصدر الله أمرًا أحمق كهذا، ولا شيء من هذا القبيل مكتوبٌ في قلب الإنسان؛ وما يريده الله من الإنسان لا يتركه لكلام إنسانٍ آخر. إنّه يتكلّم بنفسه، وكلماته مكتوبةٌ في القلب الخفيّ.
