علم أن الإسكندر، بعد أن أتمّ معظم فتوحاته وهو في الثانية والثلاثين من عمره، أصابته الحيرة التامة فيما يفعله في بقية حياته، فأبدى أوغسطس دهشته من أن الإسكندر لم يرَ أن تنظيم الإمبراطورية التي فتحها أعظم شأنًا من فتحها نفسه.
