ثمّةَ خوفٌ فاضلٌ هو ثمرةُ الإيمان، وثمّةَ خوفٌ آثمٌ هو وليدُ الشك. الأوّلُ يفضي إلى الرجاء، لأنه اتكالٌ على الله الذي نؤمن به؛ والثاني يميل إلى اليأس، لأنه عدمُ اتكالٍ على الله الذي لا نؤمن به. أصحابُ الصنف الأول يخافون أن يفقدوا الله؛ وأصحابُ الصنف الثاني يخافون أن يجدوه.
