يعتمد التقدّم المطّرد للإنسان اعتماداً حيوياً على الاختراع، وهو أهم ثمرات عقله المبدع. وغايته القصوى إخضاع العالم المادي إخضاعاً كاملاً لسلطان العقل، وتسخير قوى الطبيعة لحاجات الإنسان. وهذه مهمة شاقة يقوم بها المخترع، الذي كثيراً ما يُساء فهمه ولا يُكافأ. لكنه يجد تعويضاً وافياً في متعة ممارسة قدراته، وفي العلم بأنه واحد من تلك الطبقة المميّزة استثنائياً، التي لولاها لهلكت البشرية منذ زمن بعيد في صراعها المرير مع عناصر طبيعية لا ترحم. . . .
