وُلدت أمتنا على الإبادة الجماعية حين تبنّت عقيدة مفادها أن الأمريكي الأصلي، الهندي، عرقٌ دونيّ. ... ربما نكون الأمة الوحيدة التي سعت، بوصفها سياسةً وطنيةً، إلى محو سكانها الأصليين. بل إننا رفعنا تلك التجربة المأساوية إلى مصاف حملة نبيلة. والحقّ أننا حتى اليوم لم نسمح لأنفسنا برفض هذه الصفحة المخزية أو الشعور بالندم عليها.
