ينبغي النظر إلى غابات العالم على حقيقتها: مرافق عالمية عملاقة، تقدم خدمات عامة أساسية للبشرية على نطاق واسع. فهي تخزّن الكربون، الذي ينطلق إلى الغلاف الجوي حين تحترق، فيزيد من الاحترار العالمي. والحياة التي تحتضنها تنقّي الهواء من الملوثات وتمدّه بالرطوبة. وهي بمثابة منظّم حراري طبيعي، يسهم في تنظيم مناخنا وإعالة حياة 1.4 مليار من أفقر سكان هذه الأرض.
