لقد حفظنا الله، طوال هذه السنين، في سلامٍ ورخاء. وقد نمونا عددًا وثروةً وقوةً كما لم تنمُ أمّةٌ قبلنا. لكنّنا نسينا الله. نسينا اليد الكريمة التي حفظتنا في سلام، وكثّرتنا وأغنتنا وقوّتنا، وتوهّمنا باطلًا، في غرور قلوبنا، أن هذه النعم كلّها كانت ثمرة حكمةٍ وفضيلةٍ تفوقانِ ما لدينا. وقد أسكرنا نجاحٌ متّصل، فصرنا من الاكتفاء بالنفس بحيث لا نشعر بحاجتنا إلى نعمة تفدينا وتحفظنا، ومن الكبرياء بحيث لا نتضرع إلى الإله الذي خلقنا!
