لو كنّا نعيش في دولةٍ تكون فيها الفضيلة مربحة، لجعلنا الحسُّ السليم قدّيسين. لكنّنا نرى أنّ الطمع والغضب والكبرياء والحماقة كثيرًا ما تُدرّ أرباحًا تفوق الإحسان والتواضع والعدل والتفكّر بكثير، فلعلّنا ينبغي أن نثبت قليلًا، ولو على خطر أن نُعدّ أبطالًا.
