يُحكم على الأفعال بأنها حسنة أو سيئة، لا بذاتها، بل بحسب من يرتكبها. ولا يوجد تقريبًا أي ضربٍ من ضروب الفظاعة (التعذيب، والسجن دون محاكمة، والاغتيال، وقصف المدنيين) إلا ويتغيّر لونه الأخلاقي حين يرتكبه «جانبنا». القومي لا يستنكر فحسب الفظائع التي يرتكبها جانبه، بل له قدرة لافتة على ألّا يسمع بها أصلًا.
