يشترك كل ما هو أفضل في أمرٍ واحد: احترامُ الواقع، والإقرارُ بأسبقيته على الخيال. فحتى أغنى الخيال وأجمحه وأكثره إدهاشًا لا يبلغ ثراءً وجموحًا وإدهاشًا كالواقع. ومهمة الشاعر أن يلتقط خيوطًا مفردةً من هذا النسيج الكثيف الملوّن.
