أعني بـ«القومية» أولاً عادةَ افتراض أن البشر يمكن تصنيفهم كما تُصنَّف الحشرات، وأن كتلاً بأكملها من الملايين وعشرات الملايين يمكن وسمها بثقة بأنها «خيرة» أو «شريرة». وأعني بـ«الوطنية» التعلّقَ بمكان بعينه وبأسلوب حياة بعينه، يرى المرء أنه الأفضل في العالم، دون رغبة في فرضه على الآخرين. فالوطنية بطبيعتها دفاعية، عسكرياً وثقافياً. أما القومية فلا تنفصل عن الرغبة في السلطة.
