حين أقول إن الإرهاب حربٌ على الحضارة، قد يُعترض عليّ بأن الإرهابيين كثيراً ما يكونون مثاليين يسعون إلى غايات نبيلة في نهاية المطاف، كالاستقلال الوطني أو الإقليمي وما شابه. ولا أقبل هذه الحجة. فلا أستطيع أن أوافق على أن الإرهابي قد يكون مثالياً يوماً، أو أن الأهداف المنشودة قد تبرّر الإرهاب. إن أثر الإرهاب، لا على الدول فحسب، بل على الإنسانية جمعاء، شرٌّ في جوهره، وشرٌّ بالضرورة، وشرٌّ محض.
