يكشف استعمال كلمتي «العام» و«المجال العام» عن تعدّد المعاني المتزامنة فيهما. فأصولهما تعود إلى مراحل تاريخية شتّى، وحين تُطبَّق تزامنيًّا على أحوال مجتمع برجوازي متقدم صناعيًّا وقائم بوصفه دولة رعاية اجتماعية، تندمج في مزيج ملتبس. ومع ذلك فإن الأحوال نفسها التي تجعل اللغة الموروثة تبدو غير ملائمة، تبدو مُلحّة على استعمال هذه الكلمات، مهما اختلط توظيفها.
