إنّ زعماء الحزب الديمقراطي وزعماء الحزب الجمهوري على حدٍّ سواء يُحكمون قبضتهم على آلات الحزبين في الولايات وعلى المستوى القومي أكثر من أي وقت مضى. وهذه السيطرة الملتوية للحزبين القديمين من قِبل المستفيدين من الامتيازات السياسية والتجارية تجعل التوقع من أيٍّ منهما خدمةً بعيدة المدى وجوهرية أمرًا عديم الجدوى.
