يرفض كثير من الأطباء النفسيين وعلماء النفس أن يتقبّلوا فكرة أنّ المجتمع ككلّ قد يفتقر إلى العقلانية. يرون أنّ مشكلة الصحة النفسية في المجتمع ليست إلا عدد الأفراد «غير المتكيّفين»، لا احتمال أن يكون الخلل في الثقافة ذاتها.
