كانت النجوم تبعث ضوءها عبر سماء الليل في تلك القرية الجبلية الصغيرة، فأذابت الصمتُ والبردُ العتمةَ. كان الأمر، لا أدري كيف أصفه، كأنّ كل ما هو صلبٌ قد ذاب في الأثير، فمحا كل فردية، وابتلعنا نحن الجامدين في العتمة الهائلة. لم تكن ثمة سحابة واحدة تمنح الفضاء عمقًا، ولا حجبت أيّ جزء من السماء المرصّعة بالنجوم.
