أرى أن السمة البارزة للقرن التاسع عشر هي النموّ السريع للروح العلمية، وما تبع ذلك من تطبيق مناهج البحث العلمي على كل المسائل التي يشغلها العقل البشري، ورفضٍ متلازمٍ للمعتقدات الموروثة التي أثبتت عجزها عن الصمود أمام هذا البحث.
